Wrong Finger Amputated: Hospital's Surgical Blunder Revealed
2 Apr
Summary
- A boy's surgery was performed on the wrong hand due to a doctor's error.
- A committee investigated the medical error and submitted its report.
- Hospital assures corrective surgery for the correct finger is underway.

A six-year-old boy underwent a mistaken surgical procedure on March 27, where a doctor amputated the wrong finger on his left hand instead of the intended right hand. The child had been admitted for bilateral postaxial polydactyly and experienced pain and clumsiness.
Following the family's allegations of negligence, a two-member inquiry panel was formed. This committee, led by Solapur district civil surgeon Dr Varsha Doifode, examined medical records and staff accounts, submitting its report on Tuesday.
Hospital officials have pacified the family and confirmed that preparations for the correct surgery on the right hand are in progress. The deputy director of health services, Dr Bhagwan Pawar, stated that the report calls for accountability and corrective measures, but disciplinary action against the surgeon and anesthetist has been deferred.
Dr Pawar explained that immediate action could disrupt surgical services at the sub-district hospital, which serves a large patient base. The health department is carefully considering how to proceed without impacting essential medical care.
