A London family's ordeal began when their six-month-old son, Lennie, started experiencing frequent colds and chest infections. Parents Charlie King and Abbie Rogers were initially told by their GP that the symptoms were viral and would resolve on their own. Despite Lennie's breathing difficulties, particularly at night, and the parents withdrawing him from nursery, reassurances continued.
After six months of concern, Lennie's condition deteriorated significantly. In November 2022, the family rushed him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and a collapsed lung. He was sedated, placed on a ventilator, and transferred to Evelina London Children's Hospital's paediatric intensive care unit.
At Evelina, further complications, including empyema—a fluid buildup on his lung—were identified. Lennie underwent two critical operations: one to drain the fluid and another to secure his lung. He responded well to treatment and was discharged after a year of follow-up appointments, having made a complete recovery.
Now four years old, Lennie is a healthy and energetic child. His father, Charlie, is preparing to run the London Marathon on April 26 to raise funds for Evelina London Children's Hospital, expressing deep gratitude for the hospital's life-saving care.
