A six-year-old boy from Bihar's Gopalganj district experienced a life-threatening event on July 29 when an e-rickshaw severely injured his liver. The accident resulted in a Grade IV liver injury and accumulated nearly two liters of blood within his abdomen. He was brought to the Apex Trauma Centre at SGPGIMS in Lucknow on August 1, requiring immediate emergency surgery to control the critical bleeding.
The Trauma Surgery team successfully managed the hemorrhage and stabilized the damaged liver. Post-surgery, the child required mechanical ventilation for approximately 48 hours and remained under close monitoring in the trauma center. This period was crucial for managing potential complications like infection and respiratory issues associated with major abdominal trauma.
After gradually improving and being weaned off ventilatory support, the boy received multidisciplinary care. He was finally discharged on August 19, 18 days after his admission, in satisfactory condition. This case underscores the importance of recognizing internal bleeding after accidents, even without visible external trauma, and highlights the critical role of specialized trauma centers like SGPGIMS for complex injuries.
