Rabies Claims Young Life Despite Vaccine
5 Nov
Summary
- A 12-year-old boy died of rabies despite receiving a vaccine.
- Lack of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) contributed to the fatal outcome.
- Sindh has reported 43 rabies deaths so far this year.

A 12-year-old boy from Balochistan tragically died from rabies on Wednesday evening at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), four days after being admitted. The child had a history of a dog bite in Jhal Magsi district and had received a vaccine, yet still developed rabies.
Doctors at JPMC noted the boy presented with classic symptoms of encephalitic rabies, including high fever, hydrophobia, and irritability, along with injuries around his eyes. They stated that the immediate administration of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG), a crucial life-saving medication, was not given.
This lack of timely RIG and adequate vaccine doses is believed to have led to the fatal outcome. The incident highlights critical gaps in post-exposure rabies treatment, particularly concerning the availability and administration of essential medications.
Recently, a six-year-old boy from Badin also died of rabies at Liaquat University Hospital, despite receiving RIG and vaccine doses. This brings the total number of rabies deaths in Sindh to 43 this year, prompting serious questions about the quality of vaccines and the training of healthcare staff.
Many rabies cases reportedly go unreported as individuals resort to home remedies or traditional healers. Experts stress the urgent need for increased public awareness, effective dog population control, and accessible, appropriate medical treatment in all hospitals to combat this deadly disease.
