Summary
- Young woman masked bowel symptoms for a year due to embarrassment.
- Delayed doctor's visit led to life-saving emergency surgery.
- Survivor urges others to overcome shame and seek medical help.

A 23-year-old woman has shared her harrowing experience of losing her large intestine due to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which she delayed seeking treatment for out of embarrassment. Alex Lyons began experiencing symptoms such as frequent bowel movements and blood in her stool at age 21, recognizing them as signs of IBD due to her twin brother Joe's existing diagnosis. Fearing the emotional toll on her family, she chose to ignore her symptoms for a year.
Diagnosed with IBD last year, Alex's treatment proved ineffective, culminating in emergency surgery last month. She now lives with a stoma, a significant adjustment involving frequent bag emptying and dietary changes. Alex, from Armagh, emphasizes that if she had sought medical help earlier, she might have avoided losing her bowel. She is urging anyone experiencing symptoms like diarrhea, stomach pain, or blood in their stool to consult a doctor without delay.
