Disability Toilet Fails: Access Denied by Faulty System
4 Oct
Summary
- New security system at specialist toilet has locked out users.
- Faulty intercom prevented carers from accessing facility multiple times.
- System software error identified, now updated by council.
A specialist Changing Places toilet in Bournemouth's Lower Gardens has faced accessibility issues following the installation of a new security system. This facility, designed for individuals with severe disabilities and their carers, was recently reopened in August after a year-long closure due to vandalism.
Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council implemented a video-enabled intercom system requiring users to call for access. However, Gemma Cardona reported that her son Patrick Conyard, who has a rare genetic disorder, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy, was twice unable to use the facility because his carers' intercom calls went unanswered.
Carers attempting to gain entry shortly after the toilet's reopening were initially successful only when a cleaner arrived. On a subsequent occasion on September 25, 2026, no response was received from the intercom, forcing Patrick's carers to abandon their outing and take him home.
The council has since identified a "software error" within the intercom system and confirmed that an update has been applied, ensuring the system now operates as intended.
