Botulism Bacteria Found in Infant Formula Samples
26 Jan
Summary
- Bacteria causing botulism found in infant formula samples.
- Outbreak linked to ByHeart formula sickened 51 babies.
- Investigation aims to pinpoint the source of contamination.
Federal health officials have detected bacteria responsible for infant botulism in samples associated with ByHeart infant formula. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the bacteria in an unopened can of the formula and in the organic whole milk powder used in its production. These findings align with bacteria strains identified in a sick infant. The investigation, which began after a surge in infant botulism cases in November 2023, aims to pinpoint the exact source of contamination.
ByHeart has acknowledged these findings bring them closer to identifying the root cause. The company, based in New York, has been associated with an outbreak that has affected 51 infants in 19 states since December 2023. While no new cases have been reported since mid-December, ByHeart previously recalled all its products due to potential contamination concerns. Experts emphasize the need for mandatory testing of both ingredients and finished infant formula products.
