Regular Sex Boosts Sperm Quality, Study Finds
25 Mar
Summary
- Frequent ejaculation leads to healthier sperm with less DNA damage.
- Sperm quality declines rapidly when stored, irrespective of age.
- Abstinence is linked to increased DNA damage and reduced sperm viability.

Regular ejaculation significantly enhances sperm quality, according to a comprehensive study analyzing 115 human studies and 56 non-human species research. The findings reveal that sperm quality declines rapidly when stored, independent of a man's age. Abstaining from ejaculation is linked to higher DNA damage, reduced sperm mobility, and lower viability, which can negatively impact fertility and embryo quality.
Researchers suggest that current guidelines recommending two to seven days of abstinence before semen sample collection for assisted reproduction may be excessive. Evidence indicates that ejaculating within 48 hours of sample submission could improve IVF outcomes. These insights may also aid captive breeding programs for endangered species.
The study also indirectly touches upon concerns regarding microplastics. Last year, research identified microplastics in human reproductive fluids, prompting investigations into their potential impact on fertility. While direct links are unconfirmed, animal studies suggest microplastics can induce inflammation and DNA damage, necessitating further exploration in human reproductive health.
