Summary
- A 12-week study found supplements improved memory and cognition.
- The combination includes prebiotics and protein supplements.
- This discovery holds promise for aging individuals' brain health.

Scientists have identified a cost-effective method to enhance memory and cognitive function: a combination of prebiotic and protein supplements. A 12-week study conducted by King's College London involved 72 twins and demonstrated that those taking the supplement mix exhibited better cognitive test results.
The specific supplements used were branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) for protein and either inulin or fructooligosaccharide as prebiotics. These supplements are inexpensive and readily available.
Researchers theorize that these supplements foster a healthier gut microbiome by increasing beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium. This, in turn, may positively influence the gut-brain axis, a communication network between the gut and the brain, potentially reducing inflammation and improving neurochemical signaling.
The study's findings are particularly significant as the cognitive test employed is recognized as an early indicator for Alzheimer's dementia. The research team plans further studies with larger groups to validate these promising results for broader applications in brain health.
