Simple Habits Add 10 Years to Life
17 Feb
Summary
- Eight lifestyle habits can extend life expectancy by over ten years.
- Improving 'Life's Essential 8' slashes all-cause death risk by 20%.
- Good cardiovascular health can add over 11 healthy years to life.

A significant study involving over 260,000 Britons indicates that embracing eight fundamental lifestyle habits can extend life expectancy by more than a decade. The 'Life's Essential 8' factors, encompassing diet, sleep, physical activity, weight, and exposure to nicotine, are crucial for longevity.
Achieving a high score in these essentials, particularly in cardiovascular health, is linked to a substantial reduction in the risk of death from all causes. Individuals with the highest scores, 80 or above on the 'Life's Essential 8' scale, are projected to live approximately 11.63 years longer than those with low scores.
Even moderate adherence to these healthy habits, scoring between 50 and 80, can add nearly eight years to a person's life compared to those with low scores. These benefits extend to individuals with existing cardiometabolic conditions, highlighting the universal impact of cardiovascular health.
The research, published in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology, utilized data from the UK Biobank. It suggests that good cardiovascular health not only prolongs life but also enhances the quality of aging by increasing years lived without major chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia.
