As of February 18, 2026, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Bolivia concerning a chikungunya virus outbreak. This alert, originating on February 10, specifically identifies outbreaks in the Santa Cruz and Cochabamba Departments.
Chikungunya is characterized by symptoms such as fever and joint pain, which typically manifest three to seven days after an infected mosquito bite. While most individuals recover within a week, some may experience prolonged severe joint pain lasting months or even years. The CDC strongly recommends travelers take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
To mitigate risks, the CDC advises travelers to employ insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and ensure accommodations are air-conditioned or equipped with window and door screens. Similar Level 2 advisories were recently issued for Cuba, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and China's Guangdong Province, along with a previous advisory for the Seychelles. Bolivia also has an active Level 1 alert for measles, underscoring the importance of universal MMR vaccination for international travelers.
