Listeria Scare: Blueberry Pies Recalled
13 Mar
Summary
- Frozen blueberry pies recalled for potential listeria contamination.
- Recall classified as Class II, a significant health risk.
- Pies distributed in Illinois and Oregon, meant for bakeries.

A recall for frozen, raw bulk blueberry crumble pies has been issued by Willamette Valley Pie Company of Oregon. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assigned these recalls a Class II risk rating, signifying a potential for temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.
These pies were distributed in Illinois and Oregon. They were sold frozen in bulk packaging to grocery retailers' in-store bakeries and were intended to be baked by the retailer before being sold to customers. The pies themselves were not sold directly to consumers.
Listeria contamination can lead to listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Symptoms range from mild fever and nausea to more severe neurological issues. Pregnant women, the elderly, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Listeria is a leading cause of foodborne illness deaths in the United States.
Both recalls are ongoing with no set termination date. The FDA notes that Listeria monocytogenes can contaminate food during various stages of production and handling, and environments can become contaminated through multiple sources.
