Blood in Urine: A Deadly Warning Sign?
16 Mar
Summary
- One in 10 patients with blood in urine die within three months.
- Faster scans within 48 hours significantly improve survival chances.
- A quarter of visible blood in urine cases revealed underlying cancer.

A significant study presented at the European Association of Urology Congress in London reveals a concerning statistic: one in 10 patients presenting at A&E with blood in their urine do not survive beyond three months. This symptom, often associated with bladder cancer which is prevalent in the UK, can be a critical indicator of a severe underlying condition. Around a quarter of individuals with visible blood in their urine are diagnosed with cancer, frequently bladder cancer.
The research emphasizes that timely medical intervention is crucial for improving patient outcomes. Patients who receive scans and investigations, such as CT scans or cystoscopies, within 48 hours of arriving at the hospital demonstrate significantly better chances of survival. Despite the commonality of this symptom, it is sometimes overlooked due to vague presentations, leading to late diagnoses, particularly in women.
Lead researcher Nikita Bhatt stressed the importance of prompt identification of the cause of blood in urine, as patients presenting with this symptom are often very unwell. Patient advocate Jacqueline Emkes added that blood in urine should trigger immediate action, including quicker triage, earlier investigations, and faster treatment to prevent severe illness or long-term harm. Current care in the UK varies widely due to a lack of established guidelines for doctors, with only about half of patients globally receiving a scan.
