Probe into Blood Transfusion Mishap Points to Private Lab
20 Jun
Summary
- Private lab allegedly circulated incorrect blood group information.
- Hospital maintains patient received correct AB-positive blood.
- Inquiry committee identified a private laboratory involved.

An inquiry ordered by West Singhbhum health authorities into a blood transfusion incident at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital is focusing on a private blood testing agency. The agency is accused of potentially spreading panic through erroneous blood group information. Sources indicate an unauthorized blood sample was taken to a private lab for testing, leading to misinformation.
The hospital administration denies any negligence, stating the patient received AB-positive blood and remains in stable condition. They argue that a mismatch would have caused a rapid deterioration in the patient's health. The three-member inquiry committee has reportedly pinpointed the private laboratory involved.
The patient, Surendra Boypai, 48, was admitted on June 11 for a hip replacement surgery, which was postponed due to low hemoglobin. Doctors recommended six units of blood. While hospital tests confirmed his group as AB-positive and one unit was transfused without issue, controversy arose on June 16 after a subsequent test allegedly indicated O-positive blood was administered. The health department is expected to issue a notice to the laboratory, with potential legal proceedings to follow.
