Fin Lawlor, an 11-year-old boy from Hereford, is set to begin secondary school equipped with a cutting-edge Hero PRO bionic arm. This advanced prosthetic is expected to significantly enhance his independence as he navigates school life.
Fin's life was dramatically altered at the age of two when he contracted meningococcal septicaemia, an illness that initially presented as flu-like symptoms but rapidly became life-threatening. Doctors were compelled to amputate both his arms and legs below the knee.
Despite these challenges, Fin has demonstrated remarkable resilience. He has undergone ten operations and now, nine years later, he is ready for his next milestone. The bionic arm, custom-built by Open Bionics, uses myoelectric sensors to translate muscle movements into hand actions, offering enhanced functionality and comfort.
Fin expressed his excitement about the arm's capabilities, noting its ability to help him with everyday tasks such as writing, using a ruler, and even operating his phone. His mother, Sarah Bonner, highlighted the family's determination to support Fin's active lifestyle, which includes kung fu, football, and swimming, with the new prosthesis aiding his confidence in future activities.
