Summary
- Arapahoe County invests in bilingual doulas for maternal support.
- Doulas provide crucial emotional and physical aid before, during, and after birth.
- Program aims to increase doula accessibility for underserved communities.

Arapahoe County Public Health is investing in maternal and family well-being through a new bilingual doula program. Doulas are trained to provide essential support, encompassing emotional, physical, and postpartum care, for expectant and new mothers.
The county aims to cultivate a doula workforce that mirrors its diverse community. This expansion is particularly significant as communities of color and those relying on Medicaid have historically faced barriers to accessing doula services.
With approximately 7,000 births annually in Arapahoe County, and 35% covered by Medicaid, a recent change in Medicaid benefits in 2024 has opened doors for more individuals to receive doula support at no cost.
The initiative has funded and trained 22 new doulas, with nearly half being Spanish speakers. This effort addresses inequities faced by Spanish-speaking mothers and women of color during childbirth by overcoming language barriers and hospital unfamiliarity.
Doula care is recognized for improving mental health outcomes for birthing individuals and supporting families. By training these doulas and enabling them to become Medicaid providers, the program ensures they can be compensated for their empowering and fulfilling work.
