Actress faces insurance fight amid health crisis

Actress Bijou Phillips is vocal about the financial and insurance challenges she faces while seeking a kidney donor. Recounting her first transplant experience, Phillips stated that the SAG Health Plan initially denied coverage, requiring an extended fight for approval. Following this, Medicare, which she qualified for after starting dialysis, also failed to provide promised coverage, leaving her with substantial medical bills.

Phillips, who has a history of underdeveloped kidneys, now manages her health with multiple insurance policies and Medicare. However, she still encounters issues with medication approvals, often paying exorbitant out-of-pocket costs for essential treatments. This situation highlights the complexities and costs associated with healthcare in the United States.

She is currently hospitalized and undergoing dialysis, having previously received a transplant at age 36. Phillips recently shared on social media that she is searching for a living donor, emphasizing the urgency to spend more time with her daughter and loved ones. Her blood type, B negative, means donors with O positive, O negative, and B negative blood types are encouraged to come forward.

Phillips believes her experience reflects a larger issue within the American healthcare system, where even established actors face difficulties. She points out that the challenges are significantly greater for individuals without similar resources, questioning the accessibility of care for the general population. Despite these obstacles, Phillips remains focused on her daughter and draws strength from her support network, faith, and prayer.
