- All retrieved organs were used within Bihar for the first time.
The family of a 50-year-old brain-dead patient at AIIMS-Patna recently made a life-saving donation of his liver, both kidneys, and corneas. This significant event marks Bihar's fourth deceased donor organ donation in six years, highlighting a critical need to increase such initiatives in the state.
Notably, this instance is the first time all retrieved organs from a deceased donor in Bihar have been successfully utilized within the state. The liver and one kidney were transplanted at AIIMS-Patna, while the other kidney was transported to IGIMS via a green corridor. Eligible recipients will receive the corneas.
Experts attribute the low donation rates to limited public awareness and misconceptions surrounding brain-stem death and organ donation. Overcoming these challenges is crucial to increasing organ availability and saving more lives in Bihar.
