A grave tragedy unfolded at Jamui Sadar Hospital in Bihar on Sunday, October 4, 2026, where two pregnant women lost their lives. The deaths are attributed to the alleged unavailability of doctors on duty. Families of the deceased have voiced strong accusations of medical negligence, leading to protests where bodies were placed at the hospital's main gate.
One of the victims, Anita Kumari, 28, was referred to the Sadar Hospital on Saturday night after experiencing labour pains. Her family stated that no doctor was present in the labour room upon arrival. Despite deteriorating health throughout the night, she passed away around 5 a.m. on Sunday.
The second woman, Aastha Kumari, 26, died after giving birth to a baby boy. Although her condition was initially stable post-surgery, it worsened significantly around midnight. Her family also claimed the duty doctor was absent. Despite brief improvement after emergency care, her health declined, and she passed away around 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Bihar Minister Shreyasi Singh, who is also the Jamui MLA, visited the hospital and directly confronted the management. She criticized the lack of seriousness in treating critical patients and questioned the absence of the designated female doctor. A video capturing her strong reaction has circulated widely.
In response to the incident, the District Magistrate has formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter. The committee is tasked with submitting its report within 24 hours. The Minister has vowed to take the issue up with higher authorities, including the Health Minister and Chief Minister.
