Former President Joe Biden has shared a personal update on his journey with prostate cancer, coinciding with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. He announced that the radiation treatment he underwent last fall has been effective, working as intended.
Biden, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May 2025, stressed the vital role of early detection. He stated that when prostate cancer is identified early, the five-year survival rate approaches 100%. He strongly advised individuals, especially men, not to delay discussions about screening with their healthcare providers.
The former president also shed light on significant racial disparities in prostate cancer. He noted that Black men are nearly 70% more likely to be diagnosed and two to four times more likely to die from the disease, an outcome he deemed an 'outrage.'
Biden recommended that men at average risk begin screening discussions around age 50. Black men and those with a family history of prostate cancer were advised to start these conversations at age 45 or even earlier, depending on the number of affected relatives. He expressed hope that sharing his experience will help save lives.
