New Hampshire Tops Baby-Friendly State List

A comprehensive analysis of U.S. states has identified New Hampshire as the top location for having a baby, with Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut also ranking highly. The report evaluated maternal health care access, childbirth expenses, family leave policies, and health outcomes for mothers and infants across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Washington State achieved the tenth overall position, performing particularly well in postpartum and family support, largely due to its state family leave program. This program offers parents up to 12 weeks of paid leave and a maximum weekly benefit of $1,647, contributing to financial stability during this period.

The state also demonstrated strong maternal and infant health outcomes, ranking sixth nationally. As of 2026, maternal deaths within a year of childbirth related to pregnancy were recorded at 25 per 100,000 women, and the infant mortality rate stood at 4.79 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Despite these strengths, Washington struggles with healthcare access. More than 20% of its counties are considered maternal healthcare deserts, a figure significantly higher than neighboring Oregon, which ranked fifth. While 83.1% of women in Washington receive adequate or intermediate prenatal care, there is room for improvement in ensuring consistent care for all expectant mothers.
