18 Aug
Summary
- Hundreds sick at Clarence High School, prompting temporary closure.
- Two H1N1 cases confirmed amidst widespread cold and fever symptoms.
- School management blames unhygienic street vendors for health crisis.

Clarence High School in Bengaluru has temporarily suspended all offline classes until August 18, 2026, due to a significant health outbreak. Hundreds of students and staff reported symptoms of cold, cough, and fever, with two confirmed cases of H1N1.
The school initially closed on August 12 for deep cleaning after numerous individuals fell ill. Upon reopening on August 13, a large number of students remained absent, with over 500, or 20% of the student body, reporting sickness. Fifteen students were sent home, and 19 kept under observation.
School management has expressed concern over unhygienic conditions created by numerous unauthorized street vendors operating near the school premises. These vendors, selling various food and other items, are alleged to contribute to unhygienic surroundings, attracting pests and posing health risks.
In response, the school has written to local education and health officials, requesting an inspection of vendors, action against unlicensed operators, and their relocation. They are seeking swift intervention from civic authorities to prevent further escalation of the health situation.
