Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) officials conducted a thorough inspection of 64 paying guest (PG) accommodations across Bengaluru on Friday. The inspection focused on adherence to food safety standards mandated by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This included evaluating food preparation, storage methods, kitchen hygiene, ingredient quality, and labeling.
Following the inspections, 23 PG owners were issued notices for non-compliance with food safety regulations. One PG dining area was sealed due to severe unhygienic conditions, including the presence of bed bugs powder near food articles and dumping of waste near the drinking water area. Twelve food samples were collected for laboratory testing, with some containing expired curd, bisibele bath powder, rice flour, and synthetic food colour, which were subsequently seized.
All PG owners and food handlers have been instructed to strictly comply with food safety and hygiene rules. The department emphasized safe storage of food, use of quality raw materials, maintaining cleanliness in kitchens, and proper disposal of expired items. The PG Owners' Welfare Association noted that while most owners maintain standards, some low-budget PGs might not be following the rules.
