Bengaluru Hospitals Embrace Daycare Chemo: 80% Now Treated Outpatient
6 Apr
Summary
- Most cancer patients in Bengaluru receive outpatient chemotherapy.
- Karnataka established district daycare chemotherapy centers.
- Daycare centers reduce costs and improve patient comfort.

Cancer treatment in Bengaluru and across Karnataka is significantly evolving, with roughly 80% of chemotherapy now administered in daycare settings, eliminating the need for overnight hospital stays. This shift is driven by advancements in cancer therapy, making treatments more tolerable and efficient.
The Karnataka government has actively promoted this approach by establishing district daycare chemotherapy centers (DDCCs) in 16 hospitals since June 2025. These centers have collectively provided over 1,300 chemotherapy cycles to more than 450 patients, operating on a hub-and-spoke model that connects to the premier Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO).
KMIO also supports centers like the one at Mysuru District Hospital, which has treated 32 patients with 112 cycles. This facility is particularly beneficial for patients outside Bengaluru, allowing them to continue treatment closer to home. Medical oncologists note that daycare treatment is favored for its lower infection risk, cost savings, and minimal impact on patients' daily routines, with most complex cases being the exception.
