Deadly TikTok Trend: Benadryl Overdose Sends Kids to ER

A concerning TikTok trend, dubbed the "Benadryl challenge," is causing serious harm to young people, resulting in dozens of emergency room visits. The challenge prompts teens and pre-teens to take dangerously high doses of the over-the-counter allergy medication Benadryl with the goal of inducing hallucinations or a high.

This trend, which initially gained traction in 2020, has resurfaced and is now sending numerous children to hospitals. Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth has reported over 100 children admitted to its emergency room for Benadryl overdoses in the past six months alone. Tragically, one child has died as a result of this dangerous challenge.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has previously issued warnings about the severe risks associated with large Benadryl doses, including potentially fatal outcomes like heart problems, seizures, and coma. Medical professionals emphasize that even non-fatal overdoses can lead to dangerous cardiac issues such as high heart rate or arrhythmia, and urinary retention that can impair kidney function.

Health experts urge parents to engage in open and ongoing conversations with their children about their social media use and the potential dangers of such trends.
