Record Salmonella Cluster Linked to Belgian Eggs
25 Aug
Summary
- Over 300 people infected by salmonella from contaminated eggs.
- Belgian farm's eggs sold in Belgium and Luxembourg were recalled.
- No deaths reported in the significant salmonella outbreak.

As of August 25, 2026, a significant salmonella outbreak has impacted at least 306 individuals in Belgium, linked to contaminated eggs. The Belgian food safety agency, AFSCA, identified the strain at a farm in Flanders. This incident marks a record cluster for salmonella in the region.
AFSCA initially detected the contamination in May, leading to a hen house closure and recall. By August 10, the entire farm was shut down, and poultry were culled after a second recall. The company identified as Laerco BV was involved in selling the eggs.
Potentially up to 2 million contaminated eggs were distributed across Belgium and Luxembourg, prompting recalls in both countries. Authorities caution that eggs still present in homes could lead to further cases, though cooking them can mitigate the risk of salmonellosis, which typically causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
