Belfast actor Michael Campbell, also known as Michael Patrick, died on April 8, 2026, following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). He was diagnosed with the condition in February 2023.
Campbell's wife, Naomi, announced his passing, stating he died peacefully at the Northern Ireland Hospice, surrounded by loved ones. He had been admitted to the hospice ten days prior.
MND is a progressive condition attacking the nerves controlling movement, leading to muscle weakness and loss of function. There is currently no cure.
Campbell openly shared his experience with MND, which first presented symptoms in his right foot in 2022. He channeled this into his work, co-writing a short film and a one-person play.
He participated in a drug trial since late 2024 and reported regaining some feeling in his feet earlier this year. MND symptoms vary widely, often beginning subtly and potentially being mistaken for less serious ailments.
