14 Dec
Summary
- British Columbia filed a civil claim against Juul Labs for deceptive marketing.
- The lawsuit aims to recover healthcare costs from youth nicotine addiction.
- The province leads Canada with a new law holding vape companies accountable.

British Columbia has initiated a significant civil lawsuit against e-cigarette manufacturer Juul Labs, accusing the company of deliberately fostering youth nicotine addiction through deceptive marketing practices. This legal action is the first under British Columbia's newly enacted Vaping Product Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act, a law established to hold vaping companies accountable for public health harms and recover related costs.
The province alleges that Juul played a major role in the vaping market, employing tactics like appealing flavors and nicotine salts to hook young users and prioritizing profits over the well-being of a generation. Attorney General Niki Sharma stated that the province is committed to holding Juul accountable for its contribution to a widespread youth addiction crisis, emphasizing that this will not be the last such legal pursuit.
Juul Labs has denied the allegations, asserting its mission to help adult smokers transition away from traditional cigarettes and highlighting its compliance with Canadian regulations. However, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control maintains that vaping poses serious public health concerns, particularly for young people, due to nicotine's impact on brain development and the potential for addiction, underscoring the province's efforts to address these growing issues.
