Allergy Alert: Popular BBQ Sauce Pulled from Shelves
9 Mar
Summary
- Honey BBQ sauce-mustard recalled due to undeclared wheat and soy.
- Hidden ingredients pose serious risks for millions with allergies.
- Incorrect labeling occurred when a different sauce's label was used.

Health authorities have initiated an urgent recall for Savannah Bee Company's Honey BBQ sauce-mustard because it contains undeclared wheat and soy. This oversight poses a significant risk of severe allergic reactions, ranging from skin rashes to life-threatening anaphylaxis, for individuals with sensitivities to these common ingredients.
The mislabeling incident arose when the label intended for the Honey BBQ sauce-sweet was mistakenly affixed to the recalled Honey BBQ sauce-mustard. These bottles, sold nationwide in 16 fluid oz containers with orange labels, were available in retail stores and directly to consumers.
The affected products were distributed between July of last year and February. The issue came to light following a customer report, which prompted an investigation revealing the labeling error. Lot numbers and best-before dates, May 16, 2027, are etched on the bottle necks for identification.
Approximately 2 million Americans are estimated to have wheat allergies, while over 1 million are allergic to soy. These allergies can develop at any age, though infants and young children are more commonly affected. Avoiding the allergen is the primary treatment, but wheat and soy are present in many food products.
This recall follows a similar incident in December where RITZ Crackers recalled certain cracker sandwiches due to mislabeled peanut butter and cheese varieties, highlighting ongoing concerns with product labeling and allergen safety.
