Bangladesh Battles Worst Measles Outbreak: Hundreds Infected
29 May
Summary
- Measles has caused 86 confirmed child deaths this year.
- Over 62,000 suspected measles cases reported nationwide.
- Emergency vaccination campaigns are targeting young children.

Bangladesh is currently grappling with a severe measles outbreak, one of the worst in decades, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least 86 children this year. Health officials reported an additional 426 children with symptoms consistent with measles, alongside 62,507 suspected cases and 8,494 confirmed infections nationwide between March 15 and May 23. This alarming surge has strained healthcare facilities, especially in rural and impoverished urban areas.
Children under five are identified as the most vulnerable group, with unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children facing higher risks of severe illness and death. The World Health Organization noted that declining routine immunization coverage contributed to the increased risk of a large-scale outbreak. In response, the government has intensified emergency measles-rubella vaccination drives for young children, deployed rapid response teams, and improved disease surveillance. Measures also include increased vitamin A distribution to mitigate complications from the highly contagious but preventable disease.
