September Sees Highest Dengue Death Toll Yet

Bangladesh is confronting a severe dengue outbreak, with September marking the highest monthly death toll to date. As of Sunday, 87 dengue-related deaths have occurred this month alone. This grim statistic brings the total number of fatalities for the year to 184.
The Directorate General of Health Services reported an additional 1,593 new cases in the preceding 24 hours. This surge has pushed the cumulative number of confirmed dengue cases to 61,972 since the beginning of the year.
August saw 43 deaths, July recorded 36, and June had 13, indicating a significant escalation in September. The first 20 days of September alone accounted for 26,126 new cases.
In an effort to combat the escalating crisis, the Bangladeshi government launched a dedicated three-month campaign earlier this month. Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes acute illness with symptoms including high fever, severe pain, and rash.
