Bacon Recall: Undeclared Canadian Pork Hits US Shelves
11 Aug
Summary
- Over 12,000 pounds of bacon recalled for missing US inspection.
- The recalled bacon was imported from Canada without required checks.
- No illnesses reported, but recall is classified as Class I health hazard.

In late July, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a recall for approximately 12,036 pounds of Maple Leaf Foods' not ready-to-eat smoked bacon. This recall was initiated because the product, produced between June 9 and 15, was imported from Canada without completing the mandatory U.S. import reinspection. The FSIS discovered this omission during routine checks, leading to a Class I recall classification, the agency's most severe category, signifying a potential serious health hazard.
Despite the Class I designation, the FSIS confirmed that no pathogens were found in the bacon and no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. Consumers who may have purchased the affected 12-ounce vacuum-sealed packages are advised not to consume the product. They can either dispose of it safely or return it to the point of purchase for a refund. Those with concerns or questions can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline.
