A three-month-old infant, Abbas Ali, has successfully undergone a complex surgery to remove a rare brain tumor. The immature teratoma, a form of cancer usually diagnosed in adolescents, was discovered when the baby exhibited unusual lethargy and quietness.
The tennis ball-sized tumor, measuring approximately 6x5x5 cm, had created dangerous pressure within the infant's skull and obstructed the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid. The four-hour procedure was performed at Parel's Wadia Hospital by neurosurgeons Dr. Abhishek Nadkarni and Dr. Sheena Ali.
Abbas's father, Shadab Khan, a manual laborer in Saudi Arabia, faced immense difficulty returning home due to exorbitant flight prices and travel disruptions caused by ongoing global events. The family has incurred significant expenses, already spending Rs 3 lakh on the surgery through loans.
Despite the successful removal, Abbas is not yet out of danger, as he is scheduled to begin chemotherapy cycles. Doctors have cautioned about the possibility of recurrence. The family's primary financial support comes from Shadab's monthly remittances of Rs 15,000.
