Expert Warns: Common Baby Gear Poses Suffocation Risk
23 Oct
Summary
- Infant airways can be obstructed by head position in certain products.
- Hundreds of infants die yearly from sleep-related incidents in car seats.
- Crib bumpers and loungers are strongly advised against by experts.

Common nursery products can pose serious safety risks to infants, particularly concerning their breathing and development. Sleep expert Amanda Jewson highlighted that the developing airways of babies can be obstructed when their heads are positioned in certain nursery gear, potentially affecting their ability to breathe. A 10-year study examining infant sleep-related deaths found that several hundred infants die annually due to the improper use of sitting devices like car seats, bouncers, and swings for routine sleep. The study noted that approximately three percent of nearly 12,000 infant sleep-related deaths occurred in such devices, with car seats being the most common culprit when used incorrectly outside of a vehicle. Experts also strongly caution against crib bumpers, describing them as a suffocation risk due to their fabric and padding. Similarly, products like loungers and nets, which often re-emerge on the market under new names after recalls, are a significant safety concern as they surround the baby with padding, doubling the risk if placed in a crib.
