Miracle Baby Myla Home After 285 Days in NICU
25 Feb
Summary
- Baby Myla spent over nine months in the neonatal intensive care unit.
- Myla's mother was also born prematurely at the same hospital.
- Doctors celebrated Myla's discharge oxygen-free and without a feeding tube.

After an incredible 285 days, Baby Myla was discharged from Virtua Voorhees Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and headed home with her mother. The journey was described by Myla's mother, Chi Obidike, as the most challenging of her life. Myla entered the world at precisely 24 weeks, weighing a mere 1 pound, and required intensive care for over nine months.
In a poignant turn of events, Obidike revealed she was born prematurely at the same hospital over three decades ago. Some of the same neonatologists who cared for her were instrumental in saving her daughter Myla's life. Dr. Leonard Goldsmith, who delivered Obidike 31 years prior, expressed his joy at caring for her baby, referring to Myla as his 'grand patient.'
Myla battled significant health challenges, including lung disease and a congenital heart defect, during her extended NICU stay. The NICU team became deeply attached to her, with staff often lining up for cuddles. NICU nursing director Renee Smith highlighted the significance of Myla going home oxygen-free and without a feeding tube, marking a major milestone for the baby, her family, and the hospital staff.
