Beyond Recall: Experts Urge Vigilance on Infant Formula Contaminants

Global infant formula brands are under scrutiny as Nestlé initiates a recall for certain products containing the toxin cereulide. However, Nestlé India has confirmed that all infant formulas sold in the country are locally manufactured and have passed safety tests, thus reassuring consumers. This precautionary recall stems from the detection of a quality issue with an ingredient supplied for European batches.

Paediatricians are emphasizing increased vigilance, noting that cereulide, a heat-stable toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, can cause severe gastrointestinal distress in babies. This toxin remains potent even after boiling, posing a significant risk. Beyond bacterial toxins, broader worries encompass heavy metals like lead and arsenic, alongside industrial chemicals, which can infiltrate the food chain through animal feed, water, and processing materials.
