Measles Scare: Baby Catches Virus on Bali Flight
12 Mar
Summary
- Newborn contracted measles on flight from Bali to Sydney.
- Infant suffered high fever, rash, and appetite loss.
- Measles cases are surging in a major city, NSW Health warns.

A newborn baby contracted measles on a flight returning from Bali to Sydney, initiating a terrifying ordeal for his parents. The infant, Taylen, began exhibiting cold-like symptoms during the journey on December 20, which later intensified to a high fever, a head-to-toe rash, and appetite loss.
Although his parents and four-year-old brother were vaccinated, Taylen, being only a month old, had not yet received his immunisations. NSW Health confirmed the infection and alerted the family, who then underwent testing. Fortunately, the rest of the family did not contract the virus, and Taylen recovered at home over three weeks.
This incident occurs as measles cases are reportedly surging in Sydney, with 60 cases recorded in NSW between January 1, 2025, and March 7, 2026. NSW Health has issued alerts for the public to monitor for symptoms, noting that a recent case had an unknown source, suggesting the virus is circulating within the community.
