On November 11, 2025, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand issued a recall for a range of Flowerdale Farm alfalfa products sold in fruit and vegetable shops across Victoria. The recall covers all use-by dates up to and including November 20, 2025, for products such as alfalfa salad sprouts, plain alfalfa sprouts, and various flavored alfalfa sprout mixes.
The recall was prompted by fears of potential salmonella contamination. Just days earlier, at least 44 people nationwide had contracted a rare strain of salmonella after consuming contaminated alfalfa sprouts. The Aussie Sprouts Alfalfa Sprouts 125g product had already been pulled from shelves due to the microbial contamination.
Health authorities are urging consumers who have purchased the affected Flowerdale Farm products to not consume them and instead return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning, which can last for up to a week, include headache, fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. While most people recover within a week, infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
