Statins Warning: Key Side Effects to Watch
31 Jan
Summary
- Muscle pain is a key early side effect of atorvastatin.
- Atorvastatin helps prevent heart attacks and strokes.
- Cholesterol levels drop significantly after about four weeks.

A pharmacist has issued an important warning regarding atorvastatin, a widely prescribed statin medication. Peter Thnoia emphasized that persistent muscle pain, referred to as myopathy, is a significant early side effect that patients should not ignore. He advises individuals experiencing this discomfort, especially if it worsens or affects larger muscle groups, to contact their GP immediately.
Atorvastatin, also known by the brand name Lipitor, is a crucial medication for managing high cholesterol and reducing the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. NICE figures indicate its use increased from 4.2 million people in 2022/23 to 5 million in 2023/24.
While the body adjusts, some side effects may lessen. However, severe muscle pain could indicate the need for an alternative treatment. Patients can expect a noticeable drop in cholesterol levels within approximately four weeks, verifiable through blood tests. Long-term benefits, including reduced arterial plaque buildup and improved energy, develop over months to years.
