September marks World Alzheimer's Month, an international campaign dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
In Atlanta, the Atlanta Community Food Bank and its partners are actively contributing to this cause by distributing approximately 1,350 boxes of fresh produce to seniors in underserved communities. Each box is thoughtfully packed with brain-healthy vegetables such as spinach and zucchini.
John West from the food bank highlighted the critical importance of this initiative, stating that Alzheimer's affects individuals across all socioeconomic classes, much like food insecurity. The distribution aims to provide essential nutrition to seniors who are simultaneously dealing with food insecurity and an Alzheimer's diagnosis.
Individuals seeking food assistance can text "FindFood" to 888-976-2232. This will connect them with a nearby food pantry that collaborates with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Volunteers from partner organizations will be distributing the produce boxes throughout the current week.
Dr. Elizabeth Edgerly of the Alzheimer's Association noted that memory loss impacting daily life and difficulties with familiar tasks, such as getting lost in known places, can be warning signs of Alzheimer's disease. She also underscored that adopting brain-healthy habits, like regular exercise, can play a role in reducing the risk of developing the disease.
