9 Jun
Summary
- AstraZeneca's elecoglipron shows weight loss comparable to other oral GLP-1 drugs.
- Phase 2 trial reported up to 11.8% weight reduction in highest-dose group.
- Nausea was the most common side effect in the study participants.

British pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca has unveiled trial results for its new weight-loss pill, elecoglipron, suggesting it could compete in the lucrative GLP-1 drug market. Phase 2 trial findings, published in The Lancet, indicate weight loss comparable to other oral GLP-1 medications. Participants in the highest-dose group experienced average weight reductions of up to 11.8 percent at 36 weeks.
Nausea was identified as the most common side effect, similar to other drugs in this class. While promising, researchers emphasize the need for larger phase 3 trials to confirm long-term efficacy, safety, and tolerability. These studies will determine elecoglipron's place among growing obesity and diabetes treatments.
AstraZeneca's potential entry faces stiff competition from established players like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, who have already developed pill versions of their successful injectable drugs. The oral forms of Eli Lilly's Mounjaro (Foundayo) and Novo Nordisk's Wegovy are already available in the United States and Europe, respectively.
