Assam to Get India's First Public Proton Therapy Cancer Center

Assam is poised to become a leader in advanced cancer treatment with the establishment of a Rs 600 crore Proton Beam Therapy Centre at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The state cabinet recently sanctioned the project, marking a significant advancement for public healthcare in India. This facility will be the first of its kind within the country's public healthcare system and the third overall, joining an exclusive group of global centers offering this cutting-edge treatment.

The project, which has completed its tender process, is projected to be fully operational within a minimum of three years. The World Bank will provide a loan of Rs 315 crore for the procurement of the proton beam therapy machine, with the remaining Rs 285 crore funded by the state government. This investment covers not only the machine itself but also essential training and infrastructure development.

Proton beam therapy represents a highly precise form of radiation oncology, offering advanced capabilities for cancer treatment. Its introduction in Assam is expected to not only improve treatment outcomes for patients from the state and nationwide but also to elevate Assam's profile in medical tourism. Currently, only two other facilities in India offer this technology, both in the private sector.
