26 Aug
Summary
- A 60-day campaign launched across all 35 districts in Assam.
- The initiative aims to improve understanding and reduce stigma surrounding HIV/STIs.
- Extensive outreach includes villages, slums, educational institutions, and hospitals.

A statewide, 60-day intensive information, education, and communication campaign on HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) was recently launched in Assam. This comprehensive initiative, organized by the Assam State AIDS Control Society, aims to reach 3,900 villages and 500 slum areas across all 35 districts of the state. The campaign's core objectives are to improve public understanding of HIV transmission, reduce associated stigma and discrimination, and promote access to vital testing, prevention, counselling, and treatment services.
Significant efforts will be made to educate the public about the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017, with particular attention to pregnant women and those attending antenatal care regarding HIV and syphilis. The campaign will actively engage local communities through awareness meetings and sensitisation programs. Educational institutions, including 500 schools and 200 colleges, will serve as key centers for outreach, with Red Ribbon Clubs being established. Over 100 special camps are planned at government hospitals to offer free HIV and STI testing, counselling, and treatment services.
