On November 15, 2025, Dr. Kunal Sarkar, the Director of Cardiac Surgery at Manipal Hospital in Kolkata, provided valuable insights on the emergency treatment for heart attacks. He explained that a heart attack, where the blood supply to the heart is blocked, can be reversed with the quick administration of Aspirin.
However, Dr. Sarkar stressed that the first 4 hours after the onset of symptoms are absolutely crucial for survival and recovery. He clarified that a cardiac arrest, where the heart stops completely, is a more severe, pre-terminal condition that requires immediate medical intervention. "Cardiac arrest is the end of the spectrum," he added, emphasizing that 99 out of 100 times, it needs to be intercepted at the heart attack stage.
To increase the chances of survival, Dr. Sarkar recommended taking 150-300 mg of Aspirin as soon as possible, sitting or lying down to prevent further blood pressure drop, and calling for emergency help immediately. He cautioned against ignoring the early warning signs, such as severe chest pain and sweating, which many people mistake for indigestion.
