Asia's First Exorcism Training Center Opens

Asia's unique center for exorcism training is now operational in Metro Manila, established to equip priests from the region. The Michael Center for Spiritual Liberation and Exorcism was founded due to an increasing number of cases, with Father Jose Francisco Syquia citing modern traumas as a gateway for spiritual afflictions.

The center's novel approach includes training clergy to differentiate between psychological and spiritual ailments, operating under Church guidelines that mandate psychological evaluations. However, this distinction has raised concerns among mental health experts, who warn that prioritizing supernatural explanations may delay necessary medical treatment for conditions that could be mistaken for possession.

In the Philippines, where mental health resources are scarce, many individuals opt for exorcism over psychiatric help due to stigma. Psychiatrists advocate for a compassionate approach that bridges cultural beliefs with scientific understanding. Father Syquia acknowledges that improved mental health care could reduce the need for exorcisms, suggesting science itself is a divine gift.
