Asbestos Scare Prompts Nationwide Recall of Kids' Craft Sand
13 Nov
Summary
- Decorative sand sold at Officeworks recalled due to asbestos
- Tremolite asbestos detected in some samples of the sand
- Sand products sold from January 2020 to October 2025

On November 13, 2025, a nationwide recall was issued for a range of children's craft sand products sold at Officeworks and other retailers. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) confirmed that the Educational Colours decorative coloured sand, used for art, craft, and sensory play activities, has been pulled from shelves after laboratory testing detected traces of tremolite asbestos, a naturally occurring asbestos, in some samples.
The affected products include the Rainbow Sand (1.3kg), Creatistics - Coloured Sand (1kg), and Kadink - Sand (1.3kg), which were sold at Officeworks, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids, and Zart Art from January 1, 2020, to October 31, 2025. While the ACCC stated that no respiratory asbestos was found, the presence of asbestos, a prohibited substance in Australia, poses a potential health risk if the sand is crushed or ground.
Customers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled products, place them in a heavy-duty plastic bag, and take them to an approved disposal facility. Information on asbestos waste disposal is available on the ACCC website. The recall serves as a cautionary tale for parents and educators to be vigilant about the safety of children's art and craft supplies.
