Asbestos Contamination Triggers Recall of Popular Kids' Play Sand
15 Nov
Summary
- Asbestos found in Kadink Decorative Sand, prompting contamination notice
- Recall issued for 3 sand products sold by major retailers in Australia
- Risks low, but exposure to asbestos can cause serious health issues

In a concerning development, on November 15, 2025, WorkSafe ACT has issued a contamination notice after laboratory testing confirmed the presence of chrysotile, a type of asbestos, in Kadink Decorative Sand. This comes on the heels of a recall notice issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for three other children's play sand products - Educational Colours Rainbow Sand (1.3kg), Creatistics Coloured Sand (1kg), and Kadink Sand (1.3kg) - due to contamination with tremolite, another form of asbestos.
The affected sand products were manufactured in China and sold by major Australian retailers, including Officeworks and Woolworths, between 2020 and 2025. While the exact source of the asbestos contamination is unclear, experts suggest it could have been introduced during the manufacturing process or through the use of contaminated raw materials.
Asbestos exposure, even in small amounts, can pose serious health risks, particularly for young children. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to mesothelioma, a type of cancer, as well as other respiratory diseases like asbestosis. The risks are higher the earlier the exposure occurs, as the effects can take decades to manifest.
Fortunately, the authorities have acted swiftly to address the issue, and the risks in this case are considered low. However, parents are understandably concerned about the potential impact on their children's health. Detailed instructions on the safe disposal of the contaminated sand have been provided by WorkSafe ACT, and anyone with concerns is advised to consult their healthcare provider.
