UK Play Sand Tainted with Cancer-Causing Asbestos
24 Jan
Summary
- Children's craft sand sold in the UK found to contain asbestos.
- Asbestos was detected in colored sand bottles by Hobbycraft.
- Similar products previously led to closures in Australia and New Zealand.

Children's play sand sold in the UK has been removed from shelves after laboratory tests revealed the presence of asbestos. The concerning discovery was made when a parent sent samples of colored sand, part of Hobbycraft's "Giant Box of Craft" collection, for testing. The laboratory confirmed the presence of fibrous tremolite asbestos in several colors.
This situation mirrors an earlier incident in Australia and New Zealand, where similar products were withdrawn from sale, prompting school and nursery closures for extensive cleaning. The UK products are manufactured in China, where regulations permit products with less than 5% asbestos to be labeled asbestos-free.
Hobbycraft has proactively removed the implicated sand from its stores as a precautionary measure while conducting its own independent testing. Government officials are also investigating the matter, emphasizing parental concerns and the need for immediate action.
Asbestos, a group of naturally occurring minerals, was once lauded for its heat resistance and strength. However, its microscopic fibers, when inhaled, can cause serious and often fatal diseases like mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer, with symptoms typically appearing decades after exposure. While the risk to children from small amounts is considered relatively low, the presence of asbestos in children's products remains a significant public health concern.
