Apollo & Precisio Tackle Superbugs with Lysins

Apollo Hospitals has announced a significant collaboration with Precisio Biotix, aiming to speed up the development and clinical use of lysin-based antimicrobials across India. This partnership is a proactive measure against the escalating challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The collaboration will concentrate on translational research and clinical validation of lysin therapies. These therapies are recognized as next-generation precision antimicrobials that rapidly target and disrupt pathogens. Unlike traditional antibiotics, lysins offer a distinct mechanism to combat drug-resistant infections.

Dr. Sangita Reddy emphasized that AMR is a critical global healthcare challenge. She highlighted Apollo's commitment to precision medicine and targeted, biology-led solutions like lysins. This venture is viewed as a necessary step to preserve the efficacy of current treatments.

Precisio Biotix's novel lysin products work by directly attacking the bacterial cell wall. Mark Engel, CEO of Precisio, noted Apollo Hospitals' strong clinical expertise in Asia as a key reason for the partnership. The collaboration also includes publishing a white paper on lysins and AMR management in India.

This initiative seeks to advance engineered lysin therapeutics for antimicrobial-resistant infections, with implications for both India and the global healthcare landscape. Apollo Hospitals, an integrated healthcare platform, operates over 10,400 beds across 76 hospitals. Precisio Biotix is an American biotech company with R&D operations in multiple countries.
