On World Thalassemia Day 2026, Apollo Cancer Foundation and Apollo Speciality Hospitals renewed their dedication to enhancing Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) access for children with thalassemia. The foundation actively supports BMT for underprivileged children via the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana, a program in collaboration with Coal India Ltd. Bone marrow transplantation is recognized as the sole established curative treatment for numerous children diagnosed with Thalassemia Major.
Doctors underscored that prompt diagnosis and access to transplantation can empower children to live healthier, disease-free lives, reducing reliance on lifelong blood transfusions. Survivors like Thamirabarani, now a teacher, recounted their challenging paths, involving monthly transfusions and spleen removal before successful BMT. Another survivor, Siddharth, noted the severe emotional and financial burdens faced by families in 2007 due to limited awareness and government support.
The event also emphasized the vital role of regular blood donation, with survivors stressing the constant struggle to secure sufficient blood units. Mothers of affected children urged expectant parents to undergo haemoglobin electrophoresis testing during pregnancy for early detection, preventing severe complications and ensuring better health outcomes for future generations.
